This sign appears to show Mrs Thompson but below this you can clearly see R. Denholm, again I am still investigating what the business was that was located within 1 Sciennes House Place.
As you walk along a street in a big city you have a tendency to only look at street level, what I have noticed is if you look up you have a tendency of seeing some of the history associated with the street or city. Also when renovations take place to shops layers of history can be revealed when old paint and signs are removed. Edinburgh along with other cities in the UK used to publish Trade Directories and it is my intention to use these to try and give a wee bit more about the history.

Old Fire Station, Sciennes House Place, Edinburgh
One of the original fire stations in Edinburgh still exists at Sciennes House Place (originally called Braid Place), it is now a plush set of offices. The fire station according to information I have found closed on 12 May 1915, a photograph of an old Merryweather Fire King fire engine can be found here

Celadon Thai Restaraunt, 49 Causewayside, Edinburgh
In March 2010 some much needed renovations took place to the externals of the Celadon Restuarant. As the painters were removing the paint it revealed old signage from the late 19th Century or early 20th Century.
The first photo gives an inkling of what goods were traded from the old shop i.e. trimmings and smallwares. Smallwares were deemed to be small kitchen and bar appliances, glassware, tableware and flatware.
The second photo has been hard to decipher and is still being analysed. If you have any ideas what it says please do not hesitate to give your interpretation.
